How to Maintain
a Rose Garden
Roses are considered the most revered
flower anywhere in the world. They have always been admired
because of their beauty and mystery. Roses are popular because
of their aromatic oils and medicinal contributions to ancient
civilization.
When it comes to roses and other flowering plants, the
secret of a successful gardening is the way you should
understand how nature works and contributes to the beauty of a
flowers. Nature always has this maintaining balance in
restoring and creating a new life for new flowering plants and
other living organisms.
Another important thing that you should also understand is
that many flowering plants are significantly compared to
humans. Flowers can adapt and some do not have the capability
to adjust to nature’s changing conditions. There are flowering
plants that can grow well with other plants in the garden.
On the other hand, there are flowering plants that inhibit
on a particular space on their own. Those flowering plants that
can grow well with other plants are also known as companion
plants. These companion plants play a major role for the
existence of a garden.
Roses are considered companion plants. Roses can grow with
garlic plants on their side and other plants that belong to the
onion family. Planting onion plants like garlic in your rose
garden can provide protection to your roses.
They also help in enhancing the stems and flowers of the
rose. Other flowering plants like the mignonettes and the
marigold also grow beautifully when they are planted along with
garlic plants. You may also include factors that can help in
maintaining the growth of roses such as the following:
1. It is important to choose hardy roses. The old varieties
are considered to have the hardest stems. Make sure that you
pick the rose that is not yet grafted. You may select the
colors that you want to plant and grow. The potted roses are a
little expensive compared to bare-foot roses. However, potted
roses are easier to grow and they can survive under changing
climate conditions.
2. You may start planning and designing your rose garden. To
sustain their growth, it is important that you should find a
place where roses will be exposed to enough sunlight. In this
way, they can grow healthier and with big flowers.
You may set a bush beside other roses with at least one
foot of space all around the roses to provide them the needed
air circulation and lessen the risks of petal damage.
3. You should purchase roses that can grow organically. You
may avail them from a reputable organic greenhouse provider
from your place. Always remember to read the labels and the
catalog inscriptions to select those disease-resistant
roses.
4. You should consider roses with only several blemishes and
sturdy stems. The stems and leaves should also have
well-drained soil to create healthy and big roots. The roots
are essential in supplying the needed water nutrients in order
for roses to grow large and beautiful.
5. You may soak a bare-root rose on a container of compost
tea for several hours before you plant the roses. You may
cultivate the soil and make a hole in your rose bed deep enough
and wider than its roots. Make sure that you cultivate properly
the soil that you will use.
6. Most prune roses that survive in early spring show sign
of new growth. They are commonly seen in the form of a small
red bud swelling. The buds will usually become the new branches
of the newly grown buds.
7. You should fertilize the roses regularly to ensure their
healthy growth. Roses are considered hungry plants. They
need more nutrients to create large flowers.
Some rose growers prefer a special kind of method in
maintaining roses. This method uses a slow
release granular rose food. This works when the soil can
feed the plant in different seasons.
Maintaining a rose garden also requires watering diligently.
Roses do need a water source during their growing periods. You
may also consider installing a self-watering system and
do-it-yourself irrigation system to maintain water supply in
your rose garden. Like any other plants, roses should be
watered thoroughly so that the water can fully penetrate to the
roots.
